Evil Dead II (Minutes 7 & 8)

Welcome to Dead By Dawn the Evil Dead 2 podcast where we breakdown the classic 1987 film 2 Minutes at a time.

Today on episode 4 we discuss minutes 7 & 8. It starts with our introduction to deadites in the film, Linda attacking Ash who quickly dispatches her with a shovel.

And it ends after the epic Sam-o-Cam shot when Evil Ash lifts his head from the water! The editing in the opening shots is so quickly paced it feels almost like an Edgar Wright scene.

We include another exclusive clip from special makeup design and creation Mark Shostrom who came up with many of the memorable effects in the film.

Shostrom has done some of the most iconic makeup sequences in classics like From Beyond, Videodrome, A Nightmare on Elm Street series, Prince of Darkness, Phantasm II and III, and many of the Star Trek properties. Follow him @themarkshostrom

Chris: How much freedom did you have when did the design of the Deadites, Henrietta and all the creatures? Was there a lot of guidance?

Mark: As I recall, I had really quite a lot of freedom and I gave my crew guys a lot of freedom. I was mainly-‐ I wanted to take on Henrietta. That was my baby but Shannon Shea, I hired him and he’s a great artist. I gave him Evil Ed, gave him most of that to do. And Howard Berger did the Ash makeup. All this under my supervision but I wanted to give the guys a lot of freedom because if I took on all the cool sculptures myself and hired a bunch of guys to just make the molds and run the rubber, they’d be a bit unhappy. So, I wanted to keep my crew happy so I gave everybody a little bit of freedom there.

Chase: Did you work at all with [Tom Sullivan] or get inspiration from him when doing the designs?

Mark: Well, of course, when I got the job, I rewatched Evil Dead several times. Tom had a certain look to the film. And I was aware of that. I wasn’t copying that but I didn’t want to deviate and make it something so off the wall that it wouldn’t fit in with the whole look of the entire film. We were recreating dead people and that had to be a certain consist look. That was mostly in the eyes, the dead eyes. But each character had a look what they were. Linda character, with her doll head and her rotted body, that was the only one that kind of stood out for me. There was a certain visual language to the first one and to Tom’s artistic style and I’d gone in and resisted that and said, “No, we’re gunna do a the zombies with green and yellow eyes.” I didn’t want to deviate from that. It all had to blend together.

Evil Dead II (Minutes 1 & 2)

Welcome to Dead By Dawn the Evil Dead 2 podcast where we breakdown the classic 1986 film 2 Minutes at a time. On our first episode we include clips from our talks with the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis creator Tom Sullivan who crafted the spectacular opening, filmmaker Ryan Meade whose Invaluable documentary goes into the life of Tom Sullivan and Miniature VFX Artist Robert Dyke who created the bridge shot that ends the two minutes.

Knowing that if they submitted to the ratings board it would receive an X rating, Producer De Laurentiis "allegedly" made a shell company called Rosebud to release the film unrated.

We open with the necronomicon and the amazing stop motion of it coming to life as we zoom into the mouth and see the vortex. tom Sullivan is the mastermind behind these scenes so let’s go to see how we did it:

Tom Sullivan - I did that whole opening sequence. That was all me. With the book coming in, the swirling and we - the book opens up. And then we go into the vortex, and the ghosts fly past. Did all of those. And then you see the book being written. Just the book being written shot, that's 14 hours on my feet. (Sam) gave me a list of seconds. How many seconds on each page. And so the first pages were hand drawn, a frame at a time. And then the first like, 2 or 3 pages, you could see it being written. But then, I flipped it faster. He wanted them to speed up. And so then I had already colored and cut out little pieces of text and drawings that I could just glue on with contact cement and photograph a little at a time.

The Amazing miniatures used throughout the film were supervised by Robert Dyke. Here he is explaining how he meet up with Sam, Rob and Bruce.

The Amazing miniatures used throughout the film were supervised by Robert Dyke. Here he is explaining how he meet up with Sam, Rob and Bruce.

Robert Dyke: Well, I had a production company called Magic Lantern that specialized in, pretty much, commercial work that centered on animation and set construction. And I originally got involved with Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell and Rob Tapert when they came to my office. They were in the very early pre-production stages of doing what became Evil Dead 1. They wanted advice as to how to create lightning effects in the sky, on film. So, that’s how I meant them and I liked all 3 of them. I thought they were very nice guys, a lot of energy and enthusiasm.

And so, I maintained contact with them through Evil Dead 1 and their second film, Crimewave. They actually talked about me getting involved in Crimewave special effects segment. Sam actually had some pretty cool ideas that they wanted to execute but for whatever reason they decided not to do that. So, like I said, I maintained contact with them and actually between Evil Dead 1 and 2, right after they’d finished #1,

I was looking for production assistants (PA’s) so I gave Bruce a call, not to be a PA. But I knew they’d just finished a feature and I asked him if he had any suggestions and he said, “Why not us?” meaning him, Sam or Rob. And I said “Really? You guys just did a film. You were the producer, star and director and now you guys wanna be PA’s?” They said “Sure. Why not?” So, they PA’ed for me on some commercials and they were great PA’s.

And then in time, I realized what talent they had and I actually hired Sam to direct some commercials for me and Bruce was actually the on-camera talent for a series of commercials I did. So, basically we just had kind of a working relationship and a fun relationship after Evil Dead and then they called me and said “Hey, we have a lot of miniature work to be done on Evil Dead 2, which [we] got financing for, and would you like to do it?” So, of course I said yes.

We'll be back in two weeks with new episodes every Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting April 4th.

Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2 Updates and Special Announcement

Hi everybody. Welcome to Dead By Dawn, the podcast where we are about to start yappening about what happening in the second season of Ash Vs Evil Dead and stay tuned at the end for a big announcement.

We have a bit of controversy over the start date. Bruce Campbell had tweeted that the release date was September 23rd 2016. Yeah less than a full year but since then the tweet has been released and the official word is that the release hasn’t been announced.

CASTING NEWS- TV vet Lee Majors has boarded Season 2 of Starz’s Ash vs. Evil Dead in the role of Brock Williams, Ash’s father! Man Lee Majors is pretty great. Also cast, as we all predicted would happen, is Ted Raimi as Ash's childhood friend Chet Kaminski.

Another update is that the toy company NECA has released its three AvED toys. Check out the pictures on our blog page. We get our friend Ben Fransham as Eligos in a super badass rendition.

So for the big news!

We are going to get into Evil Dead 2 for our next film but we are structuring it in a fun way. We’re calling it Evil Dead 2 Minutes. We are going break up evil dead into 45 part series where were each episode goes into 2 minute chunk of the film.

We’re currently securing special guests for the episodes and well as getting interviews cut into the episodes with the cast and crew. We already have a couple people secured including some of the animators and actors!

Music is Helena by The Misfits.

EVIL DEAD (1981)

Hi everybody. Welcome to Dead By Dawn, the ash vs evil dead podcast where we are about to start yappening about what happened in 1981’s Evil Dead.

Adam and Chase sit down with special guest Jason Brennan right before the beginning of the Superbowl. We go in detail about the production and interesting distribution of this unrated low budget classic horror film.

We talk about the first appearance of Ashley Williams who has yet to get into the Ash persona, the innovative camera techniques and how they achieved it DIY and how the infamous forest attack scene was the one thing Sam Raimi says he would take back if he could.

Other topics discussed:

Why would Professor Knowby have a The Hills Have Eyes poster?

The assistant editor of the film is none other than Joel Coen who would later go on to write with Raimi on Crimewave.

The MPAA was going to make it NC-17 so they released in unrated.

How irresponsible they were on the film by using real shotgun bullets.

Within the Woods (1978) and Sam Raimi's early short films

This week on Dead by Dawn we just watched the early shorts of Sam Raimi including the Evil Dead precursor Within the Woods from 1978.

These bootleg vhs quality short films of Sam Raimi are all available on youtube. These shorts are the first examples of many of the innovative techniques, sound design, and camera work utilized in the Evil Dead Films. Can you believe that Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell were only 19 years old?

The first short we watched was Clockwork from 1978. This was directed by Sam Raimi, starring Scott Spiegel and Cheryl Guttridge.

Next we watched Attack of the Helping Hand (also from 1978) starring Sam Raimi, directed by Scott Spiegel (co-writer of Evil Dead 2) and photographed by Bruce Campbell. Killer hand, sound familiar?

After that we went into 1978's Within the Woods which shares the basic plot structure of Evil Dead and we get the first monster POV shots.

Our last short we watched was Panic Attack from 2009 which was the short film that launched director Fede Alvarez into the director's role of 2013's Evil Dead. How did this visual effects heavy robot invasion film get him the visceral gory remake?

We also checked out a variety of interviews with Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and Rob Tapert from the years after Evil Dead was completed but had yet to find distribution.

How could you not love this guy?

INTERVIEW WITH A DEMON - Our talk with Ash vs Evil Dead actor Ben Fransham

Ben Fransham is a New Zealand actor that has played creatures in some of the most iconic films of the last twenty years. In 2015 he starred as Elligos in Ash Vs Evil Dead, as well as the Nosferatu like vampire Petyr in my favorite comedy of the year, What We Do in the Shadows. His other credits include Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, 30 Days of Night, Legend of the Seeker, and Heavenly Creatures.

What was the makeup process like for Ash Vs Evil Dead?

"Grueling to say the least... The whole process takes about four and a half hours. The problem with that is that by the time you have everything on you're just about asleep. And then you’ve got to remember your lines and get to set. You're freezing cold and you usually miss breakfast. You get it sent to you and it's cold, and you got teeth on your face and long fingernails. Half the time lunch is a smoothie and you drink it through a straw. So it’s a great way to lose weight."

"The stuff I had to do where I was hovering over Bruce, trying not to drip goo on Bruce. I’ll tell you I’m in a thong fully made up and everything. I've got poor stunt guys behind me holding me up on a satch belt making sure I don't fall, so I’m floating in the air so I’m like, 'Hi Boys!' Poor bastards."

Was Elligos the most grueling makeup process on any movie you've worked on?

"Actually I'd say Legend of the Seeker was more grueling... We'd spend 4 hours putting on that make-up, and it would take 4 and a half hours removing it."

One of your first credited roles was in Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures. How did that come about?

"When I got wind of an audition to play a character opposite of Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey I jumped at the chance. So through waltzing in front of Peter Jackson."

"And there’s another guy in the audition, a ballroom dancer a really good dancer. I thought damnit I got to do something here or I’ll lose the job. So I stuck my hand up, 'Yeah let’s see what you got', and I just started waltzing in front of him different turns and it was bullshit waltzing by the way."

On What We Do in the Shadows did you really get lit on fire?

"Hell yeah. They were saying are you sure you want to do this. And I’m like I try to do this professionally, of course I want to be set on fire.

"I have to give credit to Aron Eastwood, who you'll see in the first episode. He plays the gardener, I think, and he does the first attack on the trailer home...Very good stunt man. He doubled me for the full fire burn. I did a partial so they set a few chunks of me on fire. My legs, arm, and back are aflame for a few seconds. You do see me for the most part in the film.

"Aron does this bit when you see him for about a second, if that, of him fully aflame. There's nothing but a ball of fire and he burned for 30 seconds. Seeing a man fully torched for 25-35 seconds, it's pretty scary to watch."

Any chance we could see you in season two of Ash Vs. Evil Dead?

"Yes. There is a chance... Who knows what I would be but I'd say there is a chance."

Special thanks to Ben Fransham for doing the interview. You can follow him on twitter @benfransham. If you're in the States, he's also appearing at the Mad Monster Party as Petyr from What We Do in the Shadows, be sure to check him out.

Evil Dead (2013)

Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods. Sound familiar?

What happened to the Classic?

We talk the gritty remake/reboot of Evil Dead from 2013 directed by Fede Alveraz.

The movie stuck with the gory roots of the original films but everything is amped up times 100. Technically they achieve exactly what they aimed for, a movie that at times is hard not to look away. But is it too gruesome?

Scene cut from the movie "We're going to get you!"

This movie also established the New Zealand "Michigan" setting that was used in Ash Vs Evil Dead. We also posit that maybe it is all in their heads since Mia dumps her unnamed drugs into the water supply.

Other topics we talk about is:

Do these take place in the same universe? Could we end up seeing Mia in Ash Vs Evil Dead? Would you like to see a sequel to this property?

Ash Vs Evil Dead Bonus Episode - "Watching the pilot with Evil Dead Noobs"

One of the biggest (or only so far...) criticisms of Ash Vs Evil Dead is that it is only relevant to fans of the original series. We decided to put that to a test and watched the the Pilot Episode "El Jefe" with a bunch of filmmakers from Hack Studios in Austin, TX that somehow have never seen the original movies.

Did it hold up to noobs who have no relationship with the originals?

Final thoughts:

Plot wise, it is pretty easy to jump straight into the show and figure out what's going on. There's a good exposition scene complete with projected scenes from Evil Dead 1 & 2.

The majority of them liked it although they were surprised by the camp factor and the tone. They were expecting more Walking Dead and we're all pleasantly surprised at the lightness and amount of humor.

All that said, the viewing experience will definitely benefit from watching the originals. The amount of Easter eggs adds an extra level of enjoyment.

Everyone who decided to continue the show plans to watch the original trilogy first.

Catch you on the flip flop!

Ash Vs. Evil Dead Episode 3 - "Books From Beyond"

Should we change our podcast name to the Ghost Beaters?

This episode was directed again by Michael J Bassett and written by a different Workaholics writer Sean Clements. Sean Clements has also been working on The Grinder which is one of my favorite new comedies this year and is also known from the Hollywood Handbook podcast.

This episode deals more with the mythology. It’s first time we deal with more of a demon then a Deadite and I have to say the demon design using the shaky cam with the practical creature effect was amazing.

How Badass is the design of Eligos?

How Badass is the design of Eligos?

Evil Dead Recommendation:

The demon Eligos is played by Ben Fransham who killed it earlier in one of my favorite films of the year What we do in the shadows. He played Petyr who’s basically Nosferatu.

Favorite Ashism:

"At Heart, I'm an Alone Wolf" - Chase

"Pablo, You smooth brown Einstein" - Chris

"Maybe if we have time after we can get some Churros." - Adam

Best Kill:

Not too many options this week but we each found a different one.

Dagger liquefying Kelly's Dad's Face - Chase

Eligos gets smacked with a book - Chris

Lionel gets glass in the face - Adam

We also talk about Bruce Campbell's AMA this week and the flaw with the whole Reddit AMA structure. Bruce also compared the show to The Walking Dead during the AMA and we talk about the comparison's with Adam who actually worked on The Walking Dead.

Bruce Campbell and Lucy Lawless were on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert this week and it's the first time I realized how closely Bruce Campbell and Stephen Colbert resemble each other.

This is also the first episode to receive mixed reviews and while it's probably our least favorite of the three it is still a really solid episode that is elevated with the amazing demon effects and solid performance as always by Ray Santiago.

Ash Vs. Evil Dead Episode 2 - "Bait"

We talk episode 2 of the Starz show Ash Vs Evil Dead "Bait". Could they keep the momentum from the pilot episode especially now without Sam Raimi in the director's chair. The short answer yes.

We try out a couple of new segments including favorite Ashism, best Deadite/death and talk about Bruce Campbell as Reagan in the new Fargo episode.
Favorite Ashism in the episode:
"Good cause I was starting to feel like a real dick" - Chase
"It's not my first Rodeo" - Chris
"Sometimes the Whale needs his bait fish to remind him where he is in the ocean. Or Something like that." - Adam
Best Death Scene in the episode:
Fork in eye. Goodnight Dad. - Chase
Mimi Rogers Decapitation as she's laughing. - Adam
Bottle to the throat to Mr. Roper - Chris
